Group I


Learn Japanese VerbsFirst of all, in Japanese verbs are categorized into three groups. My understanding is that they are categorized by the consonant before ます. Group I verbs have a character ending in “I” before ます. That means い、き、ぎ、び、り、ち、み、し、and に. There is only one に verb which is しに which means to die. It is not included in the Minna No Nihongo book though.

Group II


Group II verbs have a character ending in “E” before ます. That means: え、け、げ、め、れ、べ、て、で、ね、and せ. However, with Group II has some います、きます、びます、ります,  and みます verbs should be in Group I because they are IMASU verbs, but they are our first EXCEPTION. The significance of the grouping lies in conjugating them into different forms.

Here is a list of the verbs in Group II that are taught in Minna No Nihongo Elementary Japanese Book I:

In order to remember which verbs ending in います, きます, びます, or ります which should be in group one but aren’t; remember that You GET UP, TAKE A SHOWER, BORROW a towel, PUT ON A SHIRT, ARE ABLE TO catch your train, GET OFF THE TRAIN, and be glad to BE ALIVE because you can SEE that you have ENOUGH to make you happy  and you can remember the verbs that don’t end in E but are in group two Knowing this will help you to remember which “I”ます verbs do not follow the conjugation rules for group I.

Group III


Group III verbs are mainly します verbs with only a couple きます exception verbs. The verb きます, as well as つれてきます and もってきます, are in Group III. That is a fairly easy exception to remember. To remember that つれてきます and もってきます are in Group III and not つれてきます and もってきます (which mean to take someone/something), remember that きます means to come, and when you are asked to COME somewhere you BRING someone/something with you, but いきます means to go and when you GO (or leave somewhere) you TAKE someone/something with you. きます verbs are in group I.  Group III verbs included in the Minna No Nihongo Elementary Japanese Book are:

To remember which します verbs are exceptions and are in Group I rather than Group III, REMEMBER to PUSH the button to make a WITHDRAW and TURN the automatic withdrawal OFF so that you can TAKE OUT the money you need to RETURN to your friend who you LENT money to and who you hardly ever TALK to but are making an attempt to REPAIR your relationship with them before you LOSE them as a friend. Remembering these verbs will help you to know that these verbs follow the conjugation rules for Group I.

Dictionary Form

also known as 辞書形(じしょけ), is used before the expression ことができます(to be able to) as well as before ことです(when the verb is the last word in a sentence) and before まえに when something is dome before something else. Group I

is that the all of the “I”s before ます are turned into “U”s. That means い becomes う、き becomes く、ぎ becomes ぐ、び becomes ぶ、りbecomes る、ち becomes つ、み becomes む、し becomes す、and に becomes ぬ. て形

is used as a command alone or before phrases like: もいいです, ください, はいけません, います, and にいます. て form is also used to list actions in order of completion separated by commas and ending with a verb in ます form to indicate either present/future completion or past completion. (In order to list actions done in general, た形 is used in conjunction with り and ending in います). Here is a helpful tool to help you review and memorize the list of て形 verbs.

Group I

has the most rules and is probably the most complex. ち、り、い become っ (a small つ) with a て on the end. き becomes い except for the EXCEPTION of いきます where the き becomes a っ (a small つ) both with て on the end. for ぎ the ten-ten (“) move onto the て so it becomes いで. み、び, に become んで. and します verbs simply have the ます removed and a て added. た形

can be thought of as the た in ました when translating formal speech into informal (ふつう体/ふつう形) speech. た形 is used before the expression たことがあります to express having done something in general. た形 is used before り to express in general a list of things that were done with します at the end to indicate that there are other small things that were done as well. When listing actions done in た形, it is not correct to state actions that are done every day (like eating or sleeping). (When listing actions in order of completion, て形 is used). Also be sure to not get た形 confused with たいです (to want) or たくない (to not want) where the root of the verb is attached rather than conjugated into た形. For verbs in Group II and III it will be the same either way, but for Group I verbs it is very important.

verb conjugation into ない form is similar to Dictionary form except that the “I”s before ます are turned into “A”s. Except that い instead of becoming a straight up “あ” it becomes わ instead、and き becomes か、ぎ becomes が、び becomes ば、りbecomes ら、ち becomes た、み becomes ま、し becomes さ、and に becomes な. Make sure to know what “I”ます verbs are in group II and are not conjugated the same for ない形.

Looking to go to FFLC to learn Japanese?

If you are thinking of going to FFLC, I would first off ask you if you like packed classes, strict rules, a stinky old school and a school where teachers will treat you like garbage and look forward to breaks more so than the students? Also if you even THINK you might be a bit slow on picking up the language… THIS IS NOT THE SCHOOL FOR YOU. If you’re looking to get your degree here, keep reading chances are you will NOT receive it!

But more importantly, ask yourself if you like to be extorted, because there could be a higher than normal chance of that happening at this specific school. ALSO for those people looking to get their “degree” from FFLC please turn your attention to the following comment on reddit from a past student:

NOT RECOMMENDED, I studied there 1 year and half. The moment I (and other friends) decided to leave the school they asked (the school) us to pay money we were not supposed to pay ( a lot of money). Their answer is always the same: “we made a mistake”. The dormitory also is very expensive compared to fukuoka prices, the same room the school give you for 50.000 yen can be rent for just 20.000 yen contacting real estate agencies. The dormitory also try to increase the electricity bill.

My wife and I simply were extorted (and from the comment above does it seem reasonable to say were not kidding??) when we tried to leave the school to go to another school in the area… which I’m much much happier with. They tried to tell us that we couldn’t get the transfer to the new school unless they “agreed” to it and what “agreed” meant was we needed to pay them 6 more months of school. They tried giving us documentation where it said this…. but there was NOTHING in writing nor anything signed saying that this specific “policy” was enacted through our contract with the school. So they extorted us for a recommendation to change schools even when my personal mental health was on the line, they didn’t care.

Please view the “proof” they sent us as to WHY we needed to pay them to leave below. I’ve decided instead of involved a Japanese lawyer (which all of them seem SOO understanding I don’t want to risk the money to have them go to bat for me), that I would just continue to call this horrible school out on their bullshit, at this point I rank for FFLC review, and many other goodies like that. I also tried to leave a review on their Facebook business page and then all their skeksis students that are “loyal” to them started to threaten me physically and verbally abuse me. It got SO bad, they deleted their Facebook review page, which was ranking #1 in Google… but they had to because it’s a BIG RED FLAG to stay away from them. I will be reaching out to past students and creating Youtube videos about these folks. They are not a good school, they are dangerous to trust coming over here, don’t risk your dreams with FFLC, stay away from them if you know what’s good.

UPDATE: They since got their Facebook review page back up and requested those who verbally harassed me (some with physical violence threats) to remove it. Now it’s pretty much just my review of FFLC now.

I’ve always been a bit behind the 8 ball when it comes to languages, I actually had medical PROOF of when I was in school that I need extra help. They told me… and I quote (and I’m serious they said this)… “You can always just come to class for the next 4 months and the course will restart from the beginning”…. OH, great! Yeah because every day I was there I wanted to jump out their windows on the top floor, I was the most depressed and I had the most self hatred I’ve ever had in my life because they made me feel like a low life piece of shit. I’m someone who is very active in staying positive, but if you have ANY issues picking up a language, don’t come here! You’ll be run over, I tried for 2 months telling them I needed extra help, then in the end, my home room teacher decided to give me 15 minutes a day of her time. That’s when I knew I’d never catch up and I needed more help like that on a daily basis thusly why I moved to another school in the area that is MUCH MORE helpful. (I can share who they are privately).

Below you will see the “Proof” of “Why” I needed to pay them another 6 months for my wife and I to leave. You’ll notice the first one says NOTHING about anything related to HAVING to pay them anything else and the 2nd one is a SCREEN SHOT from Go Go Nihon.. Which WOULD NOT hold up in court, it’s not an agreement, you’ll see NO signatures agreeing to ANYTHING of what they say.

FFLC is a bunch of thieves and jokers honestly…. I would love to see them go out of business and stop meddling in peoples dreams. I may be slow with learning a language but I’m a genius on many other fronts, they didn’t care about my well-being, all they care about is money! Shame on them and I will continue throughout the rest of their sad pathetic life as a language school be here to expose them and keep finding others who had the same ill treatment from them.

UPDATE: Since this page has gone up I’ve helped around 3 different people FROM FFLC try to leave without geting ripped off. But have also helped 15-20 people now steer away from FFLC by contacting me (probably hundreds more silently helped), it’s not a pat on the back, I’m just very very serious you don’t want to throw your Dream of Japan out the window because of these punks! I have much better suggestions for you all over Japan for schools to go to. In FACT, Nihon Scope has gone from an experiential blog to a Travel Agency that is now registered in Japan through a friend/partner that just got their Travel Agents license. We are helping people find better schools that will suit with their personality, FFLC has a VERY strict personality and those who make it through honestly either like or need that type of treatment, most people find it to be dehumanizing and stressful to work with their staff and teachers and overall way of doing things (mostly ripping people off).

I really think it’s funny to reference a 3rd party affiliate website to show PROOF that we needed to pay them this extra amount of money! No signatures, no NOTHING! Just frauds and scammers that should be put out of business. Please stay away from FFLC, if you need a good school to go to in Fukuoka/Hakata area let me know and I’ll in private let you know or work with finding you one that will work for what you need.

Nihon about anything when it comes to this school, they’re affiliate marketers and they make money selling and they only work with schools that will pay the biggest commission which means A LOT of good schools are not even offered to you (contact us we’re not like that). They flat out don’t tell the truth about this school and make it look like a fun exciting experience… But everyone besides again a small percentage that go to this school looks like they’re being drug through high school again.

In light of the Easter holiday I find this lesson to be very interesting, because the day I finally decide to get these three words straightened in my mind it falls on Easter, and what’s more appropriate then words revolving around birth?

So I’ve been getting these words on WaniKani.com for awhile now and I’ll start to understand them then… NOPE, I’ll see one and think it’s the other and since I’ve not had any real reason to use these words with anyone or even myself or my wife they quickly get mixed up, so here is an attempt to make sure that they can be remembered moving into the future. Perhaps I’ll have more opportunities to use these words since I now live in Japan, but I got to know them first :).

  1. UMU – 生むーうむ:To Give Birth
  2. UMARE – 生まれーうまれ:Birthplace
  3. UMARERU – 生まれるーうまれる:To Be Born

So the best way to remember UMU is by adding a bit more to it to remember it.

By the time you are going to give birth, it’s too late to turn back, U MUst be ready to give birth, you don’t have a choice.

To remember UMARE is by changing it a bit to be pronounce in English U-MAR-E

Your birthplace will usually dictate where YOU get (U) MARRIED (MA-RE) at.

UMARERU is a fun one to remember, but you got to break it up a bit. Think of the famous giraffe that was pregnant forever and what the mother was constantly thinking.

UM…? ARE YOU (UM… ARE (/R) U) ever going to be born?


Learning new words in Japanese
Perhaps these are not the very best ways for you to remember how to think of these. If these don’t sit, then take a couple minutes and think of some ways to remember these on your own. The best way to remember anything in a new language is to do space repetition and to create stories around the words.
